A great
Limburg weekend
or
An
awfully civilised start to the day |
|
|
Well here we are
again at Limburg, of course I'm referring to the so-called
Royal 'we' although once again it's great to meet lots of old
friends and some new ones. As usual I travelled on the Thursday
prior to the Limburg weekend to avoid the crazy Friday traffic
jams caused by the hordes heading north. This also gives me a
little time to relax with a little sightseeing around town
before things get whiskily crazy. Speaking of which I generally
organise a little Friday evening soiree between a few whisky
friends. In fact I was reminiscing with one about how just five
years ago there were eight of us sitting around a table enjoying
a meal and a few drams. This year I had a private room in the
restaurant and 30 whisky friends enjoying a brilliant atmosphere.
Thanks everyone, can we make it a full house with 40 next year?
Last year,
after the sudden death of my wife I was concentrating on
gathering as many Laphroaig samples as I could and the tasting
notes are now finally making it onto my website. Yes, better
late than never and all that. This year I managed to fill a few
more gaps in my Laphroaig samples but I also wanted to
concentrate on getting hold of some old blends (1960's & 70's)
and even more single grains to add to the dozen or so already on
my desk. What this means is that in the coming months you can
expect more Laphroaig notes as well as some interesting
parallels with those blends and single grains.
Saturday is
always over-crowded in the fair so I tend to take it steady
starting with a relaxing cuppa (tea) in the restaurant but my
intentions were rather side tracked this year when a dear friend
appeared and insisted I try something a little un-whisky-ish as
a breakfast dram.
That does say
Grande Champagne Cognac, does it? Distilled in 1848 and
bottled in 1933? Now that's what I call a malternative and a
rather civilised way to start the day and the Limburg whisky
fair. In fact, only at Limburg does this happen!
The cognac
had a stunning nose but of course after so many years the palate
was just a little thin or watery, albeit rather nice, but more
of that later as I did manage to liberate a sample for a later
detailed review. Many thanks again Patrick.
So, after a busy
Saturday I was thankful for a much less crowded Sunday when I
could spend more time at the stands and get my hands on some
excellent drams, as I mentioned concentrating on a few Laphroaig,
old blends and aged single grains. In fact without further ado
here's what you can look forward to over the next months on
