Wild Scotsman

Wild Scotsman Jeff Topping is an independent bottler based in the USA but focusing on the national drink of his homeland; Scotch. He offers a range of  products from blends to single malts and even T-Shirts.

I would normally include IB bottlings in the relevant distillery pages, but as he offers different bottlings under his own name I am giving him his own page too.

Location: Cincinnatti, USA

Wild Scotsman, Scotch Malt Whisky, 47% ABV

"A blend of single malt casks"

Typical cost of this bottle; €€€€€

Glass; Classic Malt

Colour; Rich gold

Nose: Initially quite malty, then a touch of honey and hay come through, but these are followed by lightly perfumed soap and even the slightest hint of light smoke.

Palate: Very smooth and warming with a little concentration right on the front of the palate. Floral or aromatic hay, butterscotch and the very faintest hint of liquorice.

Finish; Long, smooth and growing on the palate over a minute or so.

Overall Impression: Labelled "A blend of single malt casks" I guess this is what we would once have called a vatted malt, which is still a term prefer over the newer (politically correct) 'Blended Malt'. It's smooth, drinkable, bordering on complex and yes, I like it! Slΰinte Jeff.

Wild Scotsman, Black Label, 47% ABV

Batch CBVO

Typical cost of this bottle; €€€€€

Reviewed (blind) as part of MMA 2011

Glass; Classic Malt

Colour; Yellow (9ct) gold

Nose: Fruit cocktail, slight smokiness and a little peat. In fact this is just gentle fruit, smoke and light peat. Apples and pears anyone?

Palate: Vanilla with faint smoke and peat. Slightly subdued but then the peat expands and brings along a light pepperiness too.

Finish; Medium to long

Overall Impression: A very smooth and most enjoyable blend.
